Filing a Tax Return (Intra-Oral)

Filing a Tax Return (Intra-Oral)

July 01, 20241 min read

This C2 Intralinguistic (English-English) Oral Mediation Task depicts a current real-life administrative procedure that we face every year.

The situation describes the interaction between a non-proficient speaker of English and someone called Sherman Moten, When the moment comes to file his/her tax return, he/she finds him/herself totally lost in these financial matters.

«Filing a Tax Return» is perfect to help students understand how their speaking skills are closely related to the mediation strategies and microskills that will shape their mediated message successfully.

They will need to:

  • streamline a text by highlighting key information and excluding unnecessary aspects

  • adapt the message to their interlocutor by paraphrasing

  • enumerate steps or instructions

  • express conditions

To really get the hang of how these rather abstract concepts are carried out in each specific mediation task we have included a section called Mediation Strategies & Microskills in the Teacher’s Guide for this particular task.

In it, you will find examples of what could be expected of mediators when they carry out the task, in which we have specified the strategies and microskills that mediators are likely to use when they are relaying the message, with examples from the source.

This task has been designed so it can be used for C2 Oral Mediation Exam Training, serving as training both for students and for teachers.
